General7 traffic accidents over the weekend

BOSTON, Old Northern Highway, Belize District, Mon. Mar. 2, 2020– On Friday morning, a Ford Escape, being driven on the Old Northern Highway, from Maskall to Sandhill, Belize District, slammed into a lamppost. As a result, the front portion of the SUV, in which Julie Zerimar and her son were traveling, was extensively damaged. Zerimar suffered a broken rib and received abrasions to her body, while her son suffered minor injuries and was said to be okay.

According to Zerimar, her son was not driving fast or carelessly, but the curve where the collision occurred is dangerous.

She thanks the Red Cross, who were in the area at the time of the accident, and residents of Boston Village for helping her and her son, and she is thankful to God that their lives were spared.

The villagers said that they have complained about the curve for some time now, because a number of persons have lost their lives there, but so far, nothing has been done.

Another traffic accident occurred at about 12:30 on Saturday morning. Constable Albert Dawson suffered head and body injuries when the motorcycle he was driving on the Boom-Hattieville Road from Ladyville to Burrell Boom hit the side of a Toyota 4Runner that was traveling from the opposite direction. Dawson lost control of his motorcycle and ran off the road.

On that same Saturday morning, Malcolm Longsworth, 29, of Lords Bank, was traveling from Belize City to Ladyville when, between Miles 6 and 7 on the Philip Goldson Highway, he overtook a vehicle and a front-on collision occurred between him and a Silva Bus that was coming from the opposite direction.

Longsworth was trapped in the badly damaged vehicle, and National Fire Service firefighters, using the Jaws of Life, had to cut him out of the vehicle. He was then rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in a critical condition.

About two hours later, at about 12:30 Saturday afternoon, a vehicle that was traveling to Belize City from Belmopan flipped in La Democracia. There were no reports of fatalities.

Then, about another two hours later, at about 2:30 Saturday afternoon, a vehicle also flipped in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, near the Western Border.

The accidents continued on Sunday morning. Luis Matute was driving his pickup from Belmopan to San Ignacio. Two persons were riding in the pan of the pickup and one was riding in the front with Matute.

On arrival in front of the FFB Stadium, Matute lost control of the pickup and it overturned. The three persons traveling with him in the vehicle suffered varying degrees of injury, but Matute fled the scene of the accident and his whereabouts are unknown. Police are now looking for him.
