The Wolves remain winless in the 2008 BECOL Basketball U-17 Championship, following last Friday night’s 45-25 loss to Sacred Heart College. The Wolves, who entered the game alone in the cellar with a (0-2) record, had no answer for Sacred Heart College’s dynamic duo of Shimeon Simpson 21 pts 4 rebs 2 asst and Dijon McNabb 11 pts. Meanwhile, for the hapless Wolves it was Julian Guzman leading the way with 13 pts to go along with 2 asst. With the win, Sacred Heart College assured themselves of a trip to this year’s final, where more than likely they will be meeting league leading LA Tigers.
In the battle of the winless in the senior division, Maratown Patriots were able to post their first win of the season, and in the process send Venus Warriors to their sixth loss of the season by the score of 66-50. The Patriots had four players scoring in double figures, led by Mason “Pallad” Berry 18 pts, Jermaine “Bull” Pandy 14 pts, and Jovian “Grease” Urbina and Paul Smith with 11 pts each. For Venus Warriors, it was Englebert “Squeaky” Haylock with 16 pts 2 rebs, Leon Myers 15 pts 4 rebs, and Jamie Edwards 11 pts 4 rebs.
In game three, played on Friday night, defending senior champs E Three Stars suffered their first loss ever since joining the league. The champs, who went undefeated last year, and who, up until last week Friday, were (4-0), surprisingly fell to Belize Bank Diamonds by the score of 72-67. Lester Cadle from the Diamonds was huge on this night, totaling a game high 31 pts to go along with 4 rebs, while teammates Michael Martinez and Milton Hoare contributed 10 pts and 12 pts, respectively. E Three Stars, who now fall to (4-1), were led by Elroy “Shabba” Willis 16 pts 5 rebs, Jason Daly 17 pts 6 rebs, and Shannon Guzman 14 pts. With the playoffs just about two weeks away, it will be interesting to see how this team rebounds following this loss, particularly since their leading scorer, big center Mark O’Brien was benched for the entire second half of last week’s game (coach’s decision). Is there trouble brewing in the E Three Stars camp? We will keep you posted.
In other games played last weekend in U-20 action, West Side got the better of Young Stars, defeating them by the score of 49-36. Caesar Castellanos led West Side with 15 pts, followed by Halil Alcoser 11 pts, and Jose Pech 10 pts 10 rebs. Young Stars, who on this night could not muster any type of offensive flow, were led by Regis Morris 8 pts 5 rebs, and as a result now fall to (2-3), and are now in a virtual tie with West Side for second place in the division.
In senior play, SHJC/BNE blew out Spartans by the score of 90-48. SHJC/BNE were led by Mervin “Bae” Castillo 20 pts 9 rebs, Elton Moore 20 pts 12 rebs, Omar Yacab 13 pts 6 rebs, and Wordsworth Lucas 13 pts 12 rebs. Meanwhile, for the Spartans, Aubrey Lopez scored close to half of their offensive output, totaling 23 pts 13 rebs in the loss.
In Over 35 action, Esperanza Veterans pulled out the big 48-46 upset win over ICB Veterans. Esperanza was able to secure this win behind an ill advised, deliberate foul committed by ICB Veterans’ Oscar “Jordan” Quewell in the waning moments of regulation, and two ensuing clutch free throws from Esperanza’s Jesse Tate. Evan Reynolds led Esperanza with 19 pts, followed by Jesse Tate 12 pts, and Walter Reid 7 pts. For ICB, it was Rico Black leading the charge with 14 pts, followed by Kano Green with 13 pts.
The season continues tonight in U-20 action, when Hydro Power takes to the court against Young Stars in game one, followed by Hydro Power going up against Benque Rockers in game two Over 35 action. In the final game on the night’s schedule, Belize Bank Diamonds will try for their second consecutive win, as they take on Christ for Life in senior action. With a win, Christ for Life would secure the #1 seed in the division, going into the playoffs.
On Saturday night, game one has LA Tigers facing the Wolves in U-17 action, while game two has West Side taking on Cayo Ballers in U-20 action. In the nightcap game, E Three Stars will try to right their ship, when they do battle with the Spartans in a senior division match up.
