Rumblings inside the BDFA, meeting Friday at MCC

SportsRumblings inside the BDFA, meeting Friday at MCC
Belize District Football Association (BDFA) executive member Sanja Pitts dropped by the sports desk this morning to voice his concern about the upcoming FFB Electoral Congress on March 15, and his BDFA executive’s apparent unpreparedness for this important event for the future of football.

Back on December 17, 2010, after the nominations of Marvin Ottley and Anthony Phillips had been disallowed by the FFB Electoral Committee, Floyd Jones defeated Michael Novelo (former BDFA Vice-Chairman) for the post of Chairman in the BDFA. Other elected members were Daniel “Sundance” Smith as Vice-Chairman, and as Members – Sanja Pitts, Andrew Lamb and Miss Michelle Novelo.

Immediately, rumors began circulating that, due to a long time mark on his police record, Jones would have to relinquish his chairmanship. Today, Sanja confirmed that indeed, the FFB did send a letter declaring Floyd’s election void, due to the police matter.

According to Sanja, at their second executive committee meeting, at which Floyd was absent, the vice-chairman Daniel Smith had indicated that, due to pressing personal matters, he would not be actively involved for a while, and they agreed to appoint Sanja Pitts as the “pro tem” chairman, until a new congress could be called and the vacant post filled.

Subsequently, according to Sanja, Smith has changed his tune, and has instead gone ahead and began working closely with past vice-chairman Michael Novelo. According to Sanja, the BDFA marathon in Hattieville over the weekend, at which only 4 teams attended, was not discussed or approved by the other members of the executive.

To try and bring the situation under control and, especially considering the impending FFB elections, Sanja says they are convening a congress meeting this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the MCC Grounds with all official members of the BDFA, which had 17 voting members listed at their December elections. Of major concern right now, he says, is that, as an executive member of the BDFA, he still does not know who are the “delegates representing the district at the FFB Electoral Congress.”

For his part, Michael Novelo also visited the sports desk, and said there is another side to the story which, hopefully will be ventilated at the meeting.
