GeneralMarage Road: a rural warzone

LADYVILLE, Belize District, Mon. Apr.18, 2016–It appears to many members of the public that Marage Road, Ladyville, Belize District, which is enveloped by overgrown bushes, has been steadily devolving into a rural epicenter for criminal warfare.

This rocky strip of road has been the scene of several gruesome murders – from the early morning, November 25, 2012 slaughter of three-fourths of the Vellos family to the April 7, 2016 murder of 18-year-old Merkel Pitts.

However, on Sunday, April 16, 2016, at around 2:50 a.m., a family was spared this ever-more-commonplace Marage Road fate.

Ladyville police visited Marage Road this weekend after receiving a report from Cynthia Lozano, 43, a business woman, that several shots were fired at her home.

She reported that she awoke to the sound of someone kicking her door and then thereafter heard three loud bangs that appeared to be gunshots. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Police visited the scene of the crime and collected three expended 9mm shells and three slugs.

The bulletholes on the front door, kitchen cabinet and walls serve as an indication that someone at the Lozano’s residence is wanted dead for reasons the Ladyville police are reluctant to share.

Police have confirmed, however, that investigations are ongoing.
