BzSA holds Optimist Championship Battle Regatta

press releaseBzSA holds Optimist Championship Battle Regatta

COROZAL BAY, Corozal District, Thurs. Nov. 17, 2016–The Belize Sailing Association (BzSA) held their 7th National Optimist Championship Regatta in Corozal Bay (Jam Rock) on the 12th and 13th November. The event, which was sponsored by NICH, was originally scheduled to take place at St. George’s Caye as part of the National September Celebrations, but was unfortunately cancelled due to Hurricane Earl.

After several unsuccessful attempts to reschedule for St. George’s Caye, the Corozal Bay Sailing Club graciously stepped in and offered to host, providing their wonderful hospitality and seaside Bay.

The winds were light, as is often the case at this time of year, causing a slight delay for the start on Saturday, and stepping in with a steady, light breeze on Sunday. Notwithstanding the wind, the regatta was completed, with the full repertoire of races being six (6) Optimist races and six (6) Laser races.

Competitors were from Corozal Bay Sailing Club, Placencia Sailing Club, Manatee Black Bud Sailing Club and Belize Sea Scouts.
The National Optimist Championship Regatta results are as follows: 1st Place – Trent Hardwick (Belize Sea Scouts); 2nd Place – Jazmin Campos (Corozal Bay Sailing Club); 3rd Place – Peter Joo (Placencia Sailing Club); 4th Place – Adyanieri Teck (CBSC); 5th Place – Joaquin Alcoser (CBSC); 6th Place – Abner Lopez (PSC); 7th Place – Devaughn Morrison (CBSC); 8th Place – Nigel Rosado (CBSC); 9th Place – Karl Tillett (MBBSC); 10th Place – Kennard Tillett (MBBSC); 11th Place – Toni Vidal (CBSC); 12th Place – Jervis Usher (MBBSC); 13th Place – Javian Young (BSS); and 14th Place – Kaydia Andrewin (MBBSC).

In the Laser category: 1st Place – Christopher Young of Corozal Bay Sailing Club; and 2nd Place – Wilson Rivero of Placencia Sailing Club.

Special thanks to NICH for their support, hosts Corozal Bay Sailing Club and everybody who took part: Belize Sea Scouts (BSS), Corozal Bay Sailing Club (CBSC), Placencia Sailing Club (PSC), Manatee Black Bud Sailing Club (MBBSC).
