BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Dec. 28, 2017– Desmond Lewis, 35, a well-known school teacher of Dangriga, Stann Creek District, was brutally killed at about 2:30 this morning in Belize City. Police said that they were called to a house on Antelope Street Extension, where on their arrival they saw a man in a kneeling position, between two beds, bleeding from a slit in his throat and a stab wound to his chest. He was already dead. Police said that the man, Lewis, was found alone, in the house of a friend.
Reliable reports are that Lewis was murdered one day after he arrived in the city. Unsubstantiated reports made to us are that he was dressed in women’s clothes, including women’s underwear, when his body was found. A relative of Lewis said that he was gay, and that he had had to be protected on occasion from people who wanted to assault him.
A source told us that last night Lewis might have been with a man who didn’t know that he was a gay person.
Those who know Desmond said that he was kind, friendly, and very popular with the students and staff at Independence High School, where he was a teacher.
Lewis, who is from “Backatown” Dangriga, comes from a large family. His mother, Annett, who lives in the United States, came home this year to spend the Christmas holiday in Dangriga. Tragically, she must now participate in the burial of her eldest son.
Desmond is survived by his mother Annett, his sisters and brothers, and other members of his large family.
