Political puppets

FeaturesPolitical puppets

You cannot see the little political puppets who serve your enemy because there is a shortage of experience and knowledge. One of the challenges faced by those in a participative democracy is to create a society which is integrated by active citizens, prepared and organized to assume a dynamic role on the political scene. This also includes students who should be taught, through studies at the educational institutions they attend, to participate in this political system. For students to get involved in the affairs of Belize there are two things they need to know —the first one is the Constitution and the second is the history of this country. Achieving such knowledge will give them the necessary means to make a serious analysis of any of the past and present issues.

Unfortunately, Belize hasn’t developed a reading culture. For that reason, our youths and many of those who are not so young lack knowledge of the different systems of government. Nevertheless, it is my belief that the preamble to the Constitution of Belize should be taught from the primary school level. Mind you, this pen does not agree with the set-up of Belize’s Constitution, but at this moment it is the only one we have. In addition, the majority of young people don’t care about the affairs of this country. Except for a very few, their interest lies in frivolities made available through this modern technology of communication. On the other hand, education in Belize is very expensive; it is designed only for the few — and of these, it’s only the anointed ones who are privileged with a job.

These are comfortable and would never lift a finger to voice their bosses’ wrongdoing.

It has been proven, however, that those who control the sociopolitical and economic system would never permit students to openly discuss or debate any of the issues that have affected the inhabitants of this country in many ways and forms. Students have the ability to develop critical thinking. It only needs the will of those who are in charge of the educational system.
