BELIZE CITY, Sat. Aug. 14, 2021– On Saturday morning, August 14, there were power outages in an extended portion of the Belize District after Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) personnel set out to remove a snake that was on a high-voltage power line near Mile 8 on the George Price Highway.
The removal of the snake caused an outage from 1 Mile to Ji Chan along the George Price Highway; as well as in the areas along the Boom-Hattieville Road and the areas along the Belize River Valley. The power was not restored for these areas until almost 11:30 that morning.
On the following morning, Sunday, there was another power outage which affected a number of the areas that had been affected on Saturday, as well as portions of West Landivar, Coral Grove, Buttonwood Bay and Belama Phase 1 and 2. As of 12:32 p.m., power had been officially restored to these areas, but the cause of that outage still remains unknown.
BEL has said that it is assessing the system to determine the cause of outages in those areas. A release by BEL states, “Customers may experience disruptions to power supply as BEL continues to troubleshoot lines on the distribution system, to find the cause of the fault that caused the unplanned power outage to that area.”
