BELIZE CITY, Tues. May 10, 2022
The National Agriculture and Trade Show will be held later this month after a two-year hiatus, under the theme, “Innovations in Technology: Driving a Climate of Resilient and Competitive Agriculture and Food Sector”, and in conjunction with the announcement of that theme, the committee has released the names of the persons whom it has selected to be the recipients of the Farmers of the Year award for 2022. Three individuals from varying districts and one notable mention were announced by the NATS committee in its release yesterday.
Orlando Ek of the Corozal District will take home the prize for the Male Farmer of the Year. The Female Farmer of the Year award will be presented this year to two recipients after an impressive submission from a young farmer from Toledo. Mrs. Norma Figueroa took the first place prize, while a second-place finisher, Ms. Krystle Romero, was also selected.
In its release, the NATS committee stated, “Ms. Romero is the 2nd place finisher in the Female Farmer of the Year category and was very close in points to the winner. While the competition traditionally only recognizes the top finishers in each category, the evaluators felt that Ms. Romero, who can be classified as a junior female farmer, shows great potential for the future.”
The “Agric” Show will be held from May 27 to the 29th at the Belmopan National Agriculture and Trade Showgrounds. An official ceremony recognizing the awardees is expected to take place at that time.
