Belizean musician, Alexander Evans has been selected as a recipient of one of the Chevening Scholarships for the 2023/2024 academic year. He is set to pursue a Master’s degree in music through this scholarship.
On August 30, the British High Commissioner revealed the names of five individuals awarded the Chevening Scholarship. Among them is Alexander Evans, who is set to attend the University of Bristol in the southwest of the United Kingdom (UK).
Chevening, backed by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office along with other partnering organizations, is a UK government-sponsored scholarship initiative. It provides talented individuals the opportunity to study in the UK for a year, covering a Master’s degree program.
Evans will specialize in the MA in Composition of Music for Film and Television, a choice influenced by his background in music and arts.
Beyond being a composer and arranger, Evans wears many hats as a music educator, musical director, and multi-instrumentalist. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from The University of the West Indies St. Augustine, where he graduated with top honors.
He has won seven national musical contests spanning three nations. Performances have taken him to stages in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of the USA.
Evans’ vast experience includes directing both national and international vocal and instrumental groups, overseeing Belize’s Independence Day musical events for three consecutive years, and leading the musical segment of CARIFESTA XIV in 2019, the Caribbean’s premier cultural festival.
Moreover, Evans founded the Pandemonium Steel Band and UB Steel at the University of Belize. He also serves as a judge on Channel 5’s KTV and is a sought-after steelpan soloist.
