In airlines lingo, “acts of God” means that the airline is not responsible for any delays or cancellations of flights caused by nature. They don’t have to reimburse passengers if a hurricane or blizzard or earthquake causes delays or cancellations. But, yes, we blame God for bad weather and the tragedy that it sometimes causes. Satan gets a break.
This past weekend, flash floods in Texas resulted in the death of many innocent children and adults who were enjoying their 4th of July weekend, and in some cases, summer camp. As the death toll rises, people are looking for answers to why there were no warnings of this impending disaster. I can’t imagine how those parents must feel, losing their little girls who will no longer light up their lives. Shattered expectations for a future of watching them grow up and become the pride and joy of the families. Not only those little girls, but also the adults and parents and counselors who were swept away in that river of no return.
Earlier this year, Elon Musk stood on stage with mini Trump, Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, gleefully waving a chainsaw around, to the cheers of an ecstatic crowd that had not yet recognized the dark consequences of such symbolism. His DOGE cuts that he was celebrating, have affected so many departments in government, including the National Weather Service, raising questions about forecasts that could have prevented this horrific disaster in Texas over the weekend, that could have at least saved some lives. Mostly though, it has affected the lives of everyday people.
All those cheering this unfeeling man and the uncaring president whom he was representing on that stage, should cower in shame for their shortsightedness and their meanness, and also for thinking that they would escape the consequences of those cuts. Everyone, except for the very rich, will be affected by those cuts; every poor person will. Most of the middle class will also suffer the unintended consequences of this reckless indecency forced down the throats of the American people.
The cuts extend worldwide, to food, medicine, clothing and shelter in underdeveloped countries. And it’s not even that America has to take care of these underprivileged, but the goodwill and appreciation that such aid brings is invaluable, is priceless. USAID has been slashed to zero; vaccines, well, apparently we don’t believe in vaccines anymore. AIDS medications, social programs for underdeveloped countries have been strictly curtailed, if not totally canceled. And the list goes on and on—the banality of that chainsaw is mind-blowing.
But wait! We don’t have to go overseas to see the effects of that chainsaw. Here in America, that chainsaw and the Big Beautiful Bill (BBB) will make poor Americans poorer, while the billionaires will get tax cuts that they don’t need. Hospitals and schools and libraries and food assistance in rural communities will be severely affected by the cuts in that bill. The irony is that those same people cheering that chainsaw and the meanness of Trump and his band of uncaring sycophants, will suffer the most. Wat a ting!
We will see much more suffering, much more loss of lives and opportunities and dreams because of that chainsaw. And, while we blame God for some of what will happen, we didn’t vote for God. God is a benevolent dictator, which is better than the tinpot dictator we are dealing with in the White House at this moment. Not benevolent, but petty, mean, unfeeling, and uncaring about those who voted for him, and especially about those who didn’t vote for him.
I predict that the chainsaw and the BBB will come back to haunt them — not Trump or Musk, they are untouchable, but those in Congress, and all his sycophants will rue the day they sold their souls out to the Crimson King.
That my friends, will be an act of God!
Power to the people!
