After a three-week absence due to participation in the Football Federation of Belize’s (FFB) National Bank of Belize Amateur Interdistrict Championship (NBBAIC) 2022, the two top seeded teams in the Belize District Football Association’s (BDFA) 1st Division 2021-2022 Closing Season returned to action in the BDFA 1st Division semifinals this past weekend at the MCC Grounds. At the time the BDFA competition was suspended to accommodate the NBBAIC tournament, Kelly Street Bombers was at the top of the standings, followed by Lake-I FC. Both teams were knocked out of the NBBAIC Round of 16 the previous weekend on Saturday, July 9, Kelly Street losing 3-1 to Libertadores FC of Corozal and Lake-I falling 2-0 to Conquerors FC of San Pedro.
This past Sunday, July 17, the BDFA 1st Division Closing Season resumed with its semifinals at the MCC Grounds, and both top seeded teams prevailed.
In the opener scheduled for 10:00 a.m., #1 seed Kelly Street Bombers won convincingly, 5-3, over #4 seed Ladyville Rising Stars. Kelly Street led by a 5-1 margin before the Rising Stars scored two late goals, one in injury time. Goal scorers for Kelly Street were Quince Briceno (14’ & 60’), Steven Baizar (45+’ & 85’) and Comron Diego (71’); while Rising Stars’ goals were by Deltroy Gamboa (16’) and Steven Rivera (89’ & 90+’).
And in the nightcap, after a scoreless first half, it was #2 seed Lake-I FC shutting out #3 seed Pickstock Ebony, 3-0, with a goal apiece from Lawnie Leslie (54’), Floyd Jones (60’) and Ryan Simpson (90+1’).
The championship finals are set for this Sunday afternoon at the MCC.
