BTL loses gold to Marte Lotin of El Salvador

SportsBTL loses gold to Marte Lotin of El Salvador

In the first double header played on Friday, August 4, 2006, BTL defeated Managua in both games by the score of 5-1 and 8-1. The winning pitchers for BTL were Kenreen ?Renee? Gillett and Sherlene Banner respectively. In the second double header, BTL managed to split the series with Marte Lotin by taking the first game by the score of 3-1 and losing the second by the score of 10-5. Mary Flowers was the winning pitcher in the first game against Marte Lotin, while Kenreen Gillett lost the second.

On Saturday, August 5, 2006, Kenreen Gillett redeemed herself, as BTL defeated Marte Lotin in the first game by the score of 6-2. BTL then followed with another victory by defeating Managua by the score of 8-1. The winning pitcher was Sherlene Banner. Managua then came back to defeat Marte Lotin in the final game of the day in the female division. Managua finished automatically at third with a record of 1 win and 5 losses.

On the final day of competition, BTL entered Sunday?s gold medal game against Marte Lotin as the tournament favorite, boasting the best record of 5 wins and 1 loss. Marte Lotin had the second best record, with 3 wins and 3 losses. In the final game, BTL had a shaky start, as pitcher Mary Flowers walked the first 3 batters to load the bases in the bottom of the first inning. But BTL came up with some key defensive plays to escape the inning without Marte Lotin scoring any runs. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4thinning when Marte Lotin finally broke the scoreless tie with a series of hits that led to 1 run being scored. The perennial floodgates could have easily swung open. With 2 outs and a runner on third, Derene Montejo made a spectacular diving catch to save a line drive and to end the inning.

Unfortunately for BTL, the bats were a bit too passive in this game, as they failed to score any runs. El Salvador?s Marte Lotin held on to win 1-0 and claim the gold.

Commendation to Team BTL on a job well done. Congrats also to Sherlene Banner, who received an award for her pitching, and Nerecia Rowland, who had the highest batting average of 0.625 (10 of 16).
