Fatal traffic accident on the Northern Highway claims life of Trevor Lofter, 52

GeneralFatal traffic accident on the Northern Highway claims life of Trevor Lofter, 52
Trevor Lofter, 52, a construction worker of Ladyville was killed last night, at around 10:15 between Miles 11 and 12 on the Northern Highway, when he was hit by a vehicle driven by Christopher Tillett, 22.

According to police, Tillett reported that around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, October 14, he was driving his black Geo Prism bearing L/P C-33030, heading towards Burrell Boom and upon reaching between Miles 11 and 12 on the Northern Highway, he accidentally knocked down a cyclist who was travelling in the same direction, ahead of him.

Lofter was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival. Apparently, he died at the scene. He suffered massive body and head injuries. On impact, his bones were shattered and a foot amputated.

Lofter’s body now awaits a post-mortem at the KHMH.

Amandala spoke with Lofter’s wife, Martha Mejia. Mejia told Amandala that the last time she spoke with Lofter was at around 5:00 yesterday evening, when she called him to say that he would not meet her home when he arrived, because she would be at a meeting.

Mejia says she did not return from the meeting until 10: 45 that night, and seeing that neither Lofter nor his bicycle were to be found, she grew anxious, wondering about his whereabouts. Worried, she dialed his cell phone number, only to be unpleasantly greeted by the news of her husband’s death.

“I came back from the meeting at around 10:45 p.m., and I did not see him or his bike. So I got worried and I then called his phone and a strange voice answered the phone. I asked, “Who is this?” and the man said to me, “I am a police officer”. I said, “Police officer?” So I told him this is my husband’s phone. I then asked what had happened to my husband and he said he had died in an accident”, said Mejia.

Mejia says the family immediately rushed to the scene, where they saw Lofter lying on the road and apparently dead.

But today, puzzling to Mejia and her family is what Lofter was doing some 2-miles away from home and at that hour of the night.

“I never expected this and I have no idea why he took that direction. Day or night, he does not ride through that area, so I don’t know what he was doing in that area last night,” said Mejia.

Mejia today remembered Lofter as a kind and loving husband, who loved and cared for her 5 children. She said Lofter will be greatly missed.
