Gang violence costs young mother her life

HeadlineGang violence costs young mother her life

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Oct. 5, 2020– As many as nine expended shells were removed by police from the scene of a fatal shooting at #7044 Pelican Street Extension, where the life of a young mother, Nelisha Nolberto, was snuffed out by an unknown shooter on the evening of Saturday, October 3, 2020.

Investigators say the 21-year-old, who is originally of a Hibiscus Street address, was at the home of a relative socializing with her boyfriend, Camron Luis Thomas, 20, and others when two armed men entered the gated yard and opened fire on the group.

When the noise of the gunshots abated, Nolberto lay dead around a picnic table, while Thomas, who is a fisherman from Placencia, escaped the onslaught with minor scrapes to his back and foot.

Murder scene

Investigators believe that Nolberto, whose infant son is only 6 months old, was not the intended target of the attack, and according to Senior Superintendent of Police Hilberto Romero who is Deputy Head of the National Crime Investigation Branch, Nolberto’s murder is the unintended result of an ongoing gang rivalry.

Nolberto’s older sibling, Woman Police Constable (WPC) Olga Nolberto, took to Facebook in despair to vent her frustration at the senseless killing.

One person has been detained for questioning in connection with this latest homicide.

Sources inside the Belize Police Department believe that the September 30, 2020 murder of a fisherman, George Murphy, 21, in Placencia; the Friday, October 2, 2020 shooting of Kent Moss on Freedom Street, and Nolberto’s murder can be traced to a Belize City gang which has been reacting to the shooting of a Belize City man in Placencia over a month ago.
