George Young, Jr., 28, who police allege shot Chinese businesswoman Feng Xui Leng, 40, in her face, was freed of a charge of attempted murder when he appeared today in the #4 Magistrate’s Court.
The charge was withdrawn on the instructions of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Lutchman Sooknandan, because Leng, who has returned to her native China, has indicated that she will not come back to Belize.
Young was also charged with dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm for the same incident. Those charges were also withdrawn.
The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 13, 2006, at Diana Shop on Central American Boulevard.
Leng reported to the police that she was inside the shop when a man came and ordered some groceries and wanted to take them without paying for them.
Leng said the man became angry when she refused to allow him to take the groceries.
The man got on his bicycle and left. He returned shortly afterwards with a pistol in his hand and fired three shots at her and one of the bullets grazed her right cheek, said Leng. She took cover by hiding behind a juice machine.
When he heard the shots, her husband, Xui San Lin, who was cooking at the back of the shop, remained where he was.
Leng was treated at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and was released.
