Mother, 20, and son, 17 months, found drowned in Hattieville pond

GeneralMother, 20, and son, 17 months, found drowned in Hattieville pond

But it was not until some four hours that the body of the child?s mother was discovered floating in the same pond.

On Saturday, Amandala visited the grieving common-law-husband of Desiree, James Young, who lives in Hattieville but works in Belize City, who apparently was still in shock over the death of his common-law- wife and baby.

In a short conversation, Young told the newspaper that he had already told police what he knew about the last time he saw his common-law wife and son before their sudden deaths. He then refrained from commenting further, he said, because he was upset that he had been detained by police and was unable to attend the burials of his loved ones.

Austin Young was buried late Thursday night at the Hattieville Cemetery after the conclusion of a post-mortem, while his mother was buried the following day, Good Friday morning, also in Hattieville.

The report said that police were investigating the matter further, even though the post-mortem has certified that both died from drowning.

Initially, when police was told about the baby in the pond, they went to the scene. Their report said that they found a pair of slippers, a pampers, a white bucket, a wash cloth and two hair accessories, believed to be items belonging to the mother and baby, but the mother was nowhere to be found.

Police said, however, that they conducted a search of the pond, but the mother still was not found.

The question is, if police searched the pond, which is about 17 feet deep in spots, why was the body of the mother not found.

These and many other questions are what Desiree James? family members are asking.

Amandala visited Desiree?s relatives two days after her abrupt burial in Hattieville, where only two relatives was able to say goodbye to her in a way they will never forget.

Her sister, Celia James, said that she was called to identify her sister?s body in Hattieville, and Desiree?s hair, usually in a ponytail, was all frazzled out, and one of her hands was sticking up, while the other was pointing down. She said it appeared that both her cheeks were bruised and there were scratches on her neck.

According to Celia, her sister was already pregnant when she began dating Young over a year ago, and he knew that she was already pregnant, but accepted her in that condition and welcomed the baby as his son. Nevertheless, Celia said that relations between Desiree and James may have been strained at the time she died.

The last person who saw Desiree was an aunt, said Celia, when she came into the city on Monday, March 21, but she, Celia, never saw her, as she never made it to their family home on Freetown Road.

Police say they continue their investigation into the deaths of both persons.
