The “new kids on the block” of Nazarene High School were expected to be severely trampled and properly trounced for their lofty affront in daring to challenge Olympiad experienced Anglican Cathedral College in this end-of-the-year inter-collegiate friendly chess match.
It was from the git-go, and the horses were out of the gate, that Nazarene High surged forward and never looked back for a moment in the single round-robin tournament, played at Nazarene High Library on Saturday, June 6.
A.C.C. chess club manager Mr.Hugh “Pinas” Staine explains A.C.C.’s demise as due to the absence of their two top players. Captain of Nazarene High, Ricky Reyes attributes the confidence of his team to the new club management under Kofi Geban himself.
Ricky Reyes took top honors with his teammate Michael Pollard, both in the first position, each acquiring three points of a possible four. Second place was also claimed by Nazarene High’s Jamie Valle. Ernesto Burk of A.C.C. took third place. The full report follows below.
The Belize District high school team chess players are a combined team from both A.C.C. and Nazarene High. They will be preparing to go against the north zone – Corozal and Orange Walk combined team. Details of the tournament are being worked out by the host, Mr. Clarence Sheppard, vice president N.S.T.A. (of OWTHS). We’ll keep you posted.
