Police charge two for San Ignacio double murder/shooting

GeneralPolice charge two for San Ignacio double murder/shooting

SAN IGNACIO, Cayo District, Fri. July 24, 2020– An investigation into the shooting of five men at about 1:30 Sunday morning in the parking lot of CK Sports Club in San Ignacio led police to John Alexander Hendy, 33, an unemployed resident of Santa Elena Town, and Travis Tyler Navarro, 26, a self-employed resident of Gaol Lane in Belize City.

The gunmen who carried out the shooting sprayed bullets at 4 men in a vehicle, after shooting a police officer, who was standing outside the vehicle, in the jaw.

Samuel Hall, 19, a taxi driver of Esperanza, died almost immediately on the scene, as did Windell Trapp, 28, an unemployed San Ignacio resident.

Injured in the shooting were Marqueese Rabateau, 19, a sailor of the Belize Coast Guard, who was shot in the chest, back and leg and is in a serious but stable condition in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital; Constable Danny Jimenez, 32, of San Ignacio police, whose jaw was shattered after he was shot in the mouth, and who now needs reconstruction surgery; and Telesha Mackay, 28, a consultant of Esperanza, who was shot in the shoulder and is hospitalized.

Hendy and Navarro have been jointly charged with 2 counts of murder, 3 counts of attempted murder, 3 counts of deadly means of harm, and 3 counts of dangerous harm. They are awaiting arraignment at the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court.

Four of the victims were sitting in the car and Constable Danny Jimenez was standing outside, talking to Windell Trapp, who was sitting in the car, when a gunman went to the driver’s side of the car.

Constable Jimenez fought the gunman to disarm him, but he was shot in the face, and the shooter then fired multiple times at the 4 persons who were in the car, after which he escaped.

Police said that the shooting is gang-related and that Windell Trapp, who was in the car, was the target. According to Trapp’s family, he had been receiving threats for an extended period of time, and those threats against him, as well as attempts to take his life, commenced after he had been briefly detained by police in connection with the murder of a member of the Galindo family in San Ignacio.

Constable Jimenez is a star football player who played with the Police United Football Club of Belmopan, and he is also a member of the Belize National Football Team.

Windell Trapp was also a football player, who played with Verdes Football Club, and was the father of two children.
