BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Oct. 22, 2020– For several weeks, the People’s United Party (PUP) has been rolling out various sections of its manifesto in preparation for the November 11 general elections.

Today, via virtual broadcast, the country had the opportunity to receive the manifesto in its totality as the party convened at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza for their official manifesto launch.

The event featured live performances from multiple local artists as well as a brief presentation of the extensive plan known as “PlanBelize” by various standard bearers.

The manifesto focuses on policy reform in key socio-economic areas such as Agriculture, Employment and Wages, Security, Education, and Public Health.

The PUP’s National Deputy Party Leader, Hon. Cordel Hyde delivered the opening remarks and discussed the vision and inspiration behind PlanBelize and the expected outcome of the implementation of the policies and plans contained within it.

Most of all, he believes that the manifesto was bred on hope: “I believe that deep down inside, there is real hope for us. Deep down inside, we have what it takes as a people …we have the right people at the right time to do the right job,” he said.

Following the presentations by the standard bearers, the wife of the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. John Briceno, also went to the podium to share remarks about her husband, his party and his role in the PUP throughout the years. She, too, shared her views on why the PUP can and will deliver on their promises under the stewardship of her husband:

“John’s record speaks for itself. It is seen in his success as a politician. In him you will find a leader who will work hard every day, who will build a team of like-minded people who believe in hard work and dedication. He will insist that those who offer themselves work hard, treat people with respect and serve the people. That is why he set out to put this plan together.

“He pooled the talents of numerous persons from all walks of life. He does this to build a team that is dependable, inclusive and that will deliver results for the Belizean people — especially those who are less fortunate.

“These are difficult times, and I promise you that John will be the kind of leader who faces the challenges before us, determined to overcome, because he believes that together we can, and will build a Belize for everyone,” she stated.

To wrap up the launch, Hon. John Briceño also made his way to the stage and offered his own insights into how the plan was developed, and how he intends to see it through to fruition in a single term if he is elected into office:

He remarked, “PlanBelize is the product of unprecedented collaboration and research. Its goals carefully matched to the multiple national emergencies our nation faces and its implementation meticulously backed out for our first five-year term.

“Our talented team, PUP Team 31, reflects those our party has passed to represent. Wage earners, self-employed, farmers, public officers, architects, attorneys, economists, environmentalists, activists and entrepreneurs.

“We offer sensible solutions because we understand both the people and the problems, Indigenous and ingenious. This manifesto places the highest premium on radical social transformation. Belizeans must, as a fundamental right, have the chance at a wholesome education, a job at a livable wage, basic healthcare from cradle to grave, and a life unthreatened by violence and crime…I urge you, then, to examine our manifesto, to consider how it will make your life better.

“When you do so, we feel very confident that you will choose our PUP candidate in your constituency, and we are convinced that the electorate, on the whole, will, in overwhelming numbers, support the People’s United Party.”

In the event of a victory, the PUP will be serving as the central government of Belize for the first time since 2008.
