A 40-year-old Dangriga Sales Tax Officer by the name of Steven Rowland is dead following a traffic accident on the Hummingbird Highway, which took place at about 9 o’clock last night between Mile 9 and 10 on the Stann Creek Valley Road.
He was one of 6 passengers in the vehicle, who all sustained head and body injuries for which they had to be transported to the Southern Regional Hospital.
Police told KREM News that all 6 passengers were in a red Ford Excursion on their way home from a football game in San Ignacio. The vehicle was being driven by Michael Haylock, who lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a lamppost and came to a halt in a nearby orange orchard. The vehicle and its passengers were heading to Dangriga Town when the accident occurred.
We were told that Haylock escaped major injury, but Rowland was trapped in the back seat of the vehicle. He had to be removed, but it was reported that he died on impact. The other passengers in the vehicle were Lloyd Nunez, 27, who suffered head injuries and remains in an unconscious state; Wayne Young, who suffered injury to the arms and body; 32-year-old Kyle Haylock, who suffered injury to the head; and 30-year-old Lydia Nunez, who complained of pain in the shoulders.
Police said that Michael Haylock may come to face the charge of manslaughter by negligence pending their investigation.
