One of two drivers has been admitted in a critical condition to a hospital in Chetumal, Mexico, suffering from head and body injuries after he was involved in a road traffic collision at the junction of Libertad and the Philip Goldson Highway at about 8:30 p.m. Friday June 28.
Police said that Yasser Tabab, 23, of Santa Rita Hill, Corozal, was driving his Kia Sportage car when he collided head-on with a freight liner truck, license plate A-2437, driven at the time by Adrian Muñoz, 40, a Belizean driver of Trial Farm, Orange Walk District.
Police said that Tabab was travelling from Corozal Town to Orange Walk, and on his arrival in the area of the Libertad junction, between Miles 78 and 79 on the Philip Goldson Highway; he tried to overtake a bus that was travelling in the same direction, and slammed into the gas truck that was travelling in the opposite direction, from Orange Walk to Corozal.
As a result of the extensive damages to the car, Tabab was trapped behind the steering wheel. Rescuers who responded to the accident, managed to free him after some time, and he was rushed to a hospital in Chetumal.
Adrian Munoz, the driver of the truck, was taken to the Orange Walk Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
Police said that their investigation into the collision has stalled until they get a statement from Tabab, who is presently unable to do so due to his condition.
