It is said that Belize is in an economic crisis. But, then, where is the money coming from to purchase certain luxurious things? When there is an economic crisis in a home — a situation that we the poor have been going through ever since — the first thing the head of the family does is to stop unnecessary spending. Isn’t that so, our dear readers of this column? Those of you who are going through hardship now, and even prior to the pandemic, know very well that it is impossible to be spending more than what we earn. The only way we can do so is if we are receiving money from elsewhere and not giving an account of it. Such actions would be considered as money laundering.
In another thought, let’s say it is not so; then that means that you are leaving your family without food, which is one of the most expensive necessities in a household. We can do without many things, except food. The powers that be have always been unfair and taken advantage of the unprivileged class; however, these and many other things that take place in countries like Belize are because of the lack of vision from its inception. In another scenario, it could be that the vision was and has been to satisfy individual interests. Such interests spring from the neoliberal capitalist school of thought which has been implemented under the Westminster Parliamentary model of Belize.
Recently, I suggested in one of my writings that to solve the economic crisis of Belize, the only thing that has to be done is to pay ten dollars an hour to all, from the top of the pyramid to the bottom — in other words, across the board. It seems that the idea was not received well. It’s not difficult to solve such problems created by the PUDP Westminster Parliamentary kings and their entourage. And we are not going to invent the wheel, because it was done before by the former president of Uruguay, Jose Alberto “Pepe” Mujica Cordero. Therefore, the only thing that is needed is to have a nationalist mentality and to love your Belizean people. Let me once more emphasize: “OUR BELIZEAN PEOPLE”, yes, we the Blacks and Browns. You can start with a 90% reduction of the salaries of the Governor General, the Prime Minister and Ministers, Senators, diplomats etc., and charge a 15% tax on all religious organizations that receive tithes and offerings. It’s for a good cause, and you shall all be blessed directly by God. Amen.
