Acclaimed Belizean award-winning author, Zelma “Zee” Edgell, 69, was conferred this weekend with an honorary Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, from the University of the West Indies, at commencement exercises held this weekend.
She was also the guest speaker at the graduation, which she attended with her family in Barbados.
Edgell, who has served as professor of English at Kent State University, Ohio, authored the famous Belizean novel, Beka Lamb, In Times Like These, and Time and the River.
She also worked early on in her career as reporter at The Jamaica Gleaner, and later as director of the Department of Women’s Affairs in Belize.
Edgell celebrated her 69th birthday last Wednesday.
