Businessman dies after being shot in head by son

A businessman of Ranchito Village lost the fight for his life at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he died at about 1:30 Saturday morning after battling for his life for almost a month.

Hensley Jones, 53, was shot in the head about 10:00 on the night of New Year’s Day in his house in Ranchito, Corozal, by his son, Ryan Jones, 25, said police. Hensley was shot in the left side of the head and in the back of the head.

Police said that Hensley and Ryan were in the kitchen of their house when Ryan shot his father for reasons unknown, and fled the house in a SUV.

Hensley Jones was rushed to the Corozal Hospital in a critical condition by police who responded to the shooting. Shortly after, he was rushed via ambulance to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. He had been in the Intensive Care Unit at the KHMH ever since. Hensley Jones’ body was taken to the morgue to await an autopsy to certify the cause of his death.

Police said that Ryan Jones was quickly arrested in Corozal and was charged initially with attempted murder, among other charges. He was taken to the Orange Walk Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 7, where he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 14, when he was to be returned to court.

Ryan Jones will again be returned to court, but this time to face a charge of murder for the death of his father. The date for this new arraignment has not yet been announced.

Hensley Jones, also known as Nick Jones, was the proprietor of Nick’s Waste Management in Ranchito. Neighbors told police that there has been an ongoing family feud between Jones and his son, but they never expected that the situation would escalate out of control to the point where the businessman would be killed.
