GeneralFreetown Road man remanded on attempted murder charge

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Nov. 5, 2015–A resident of Freetown Road was remanded to the Belize Central Prison after police charged him with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm in connection with a shooting incident that occurred yesterday, November 4, on Freetown Road.

Mark Meyers, 22, did not have to enter a plea when he appeared before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza this morning.

Police charged Meyers with the shooting of Trevor Yard, who was shot yesterday in the early morning hours as he rode his bicycle on Freetown Road. Yard sustained gunshot wounds to his right ankle and his buttocks.

Mendoza arraigned Meyers on the three indictable offences and explained to him that the severity of the law does not allow his court to grant him bail and that he did not require him to enter a plea, because the case against him will be heard in the Supreme Court.

After Magistrate Mendoza read the three charges to him, Meyers asked the court if he could say something.

After Mendoza gave him permission to speak, Meyers asked the court whether there was any evidence.

Mendoza explained to him that when the case is tried, he will have the opportunity to make a no case submission and that he will also be given disclosure by the police so that he can know what evidence the police have against him.

Meyers then asked the Magistrate when he could get bail.

Yard explained to him that he could apply to the Supreme Court for bail today, if he had an attorney to do it for him.

Meyers also asked the Magistrate if police were not supposed to have carried out an identification parade.

Yard explained to him that these questions could be answered at his trial, before he remanded him to prison until his next court date on December 8.
