SportsIntroduction of Belize delegation attending the 2017 CODICADER Under-15 Games

BELMOPAN, Thurs. Aug. 17, 2017–The Belize delegation of one hundred and ten (110) members is scheduled to leave the country on Sunday, August 20, en route to Tegucigalpa, Honduras for the VI CODICADER Student Sports Games for 13–14 year-olds from August 20 – 26.

A press conference will be held on Friday, August 18, at 3:30 p.m. in the Marion Jones Sports Complex Conference Room to introduce the Belize delegation.

– press release –

(Sports Ed. Note: A Channel 7 News report back on July 5 of this year, titled “’Bruk’ Belize banned from CODICADER for two years,” had featured Sports Minister, Hon. Patrick Faber lamenting that, because his Government did not have the money to host the CODICADER Special Athletes competition, as requested by CODICADER, he expected that organization to ban Belizean athletes from the Games for two years. The report had ended with Faber indicating that he would make an appeal against the ban at the next meeting of SICA Sports Ministers.

Well, a couple weeks later, the newly appointed Sports Director, Ian Jones appeared to have achieved some success in that endeavor, as a Sports Council release dated July 17 was headlined: “Belizean children will participate in CODICADER Under 15 Games.” The article explained that “Belize had contacted the CODICADER President to request consideration for Belizean children to continue to participate in the CODICADER Games, even though Belize is unable to host the Disability Games (ages 16 to 19) previously slated for October 2017.” And the response was positive, as it continued, “The President of CODICADER Licenciado Gerardo A. Fajardo Fernandez today sent an official invitation to Belize to participate in these upcoming games.”

So, the trip is on. Bon voyage, and best wishes to our Belizean student athletes!)
