The loss of language

LettersThe loss of language

 June 13, 2018

Dear Editor,

While I was passing by the Mount Carmel Primary School, I overheard a teacher speaking Spanish during a math class. My curiosity didn’t come from hearing Spanish but from having heard inadequate Spanish. It came to my mind how unprofessional teachers are becoming in teaching the Spanish language. It is good to inculcate some Spanish, but teachers are teaching the children incorrect Spanish.

This said, I will not leave behind the English language, as it is what identifies us within the Central America region. Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America with Spanish-speaking countries surrounding it. As a result, Spanish as a language is now a must within our community. Learning these two languages will open doors for Belize in international affairs.
