Smart Belize Hurricanes dominates the battle of the city teams

On Friday night, Smart Belize Hurricanes hosted their city rivals, Belize City No Limit at the Belize Elementary School gym in Belize City. Smart Belize Hurricanes had a 39-33 lead going into intermission, which was reduced to 1 point in the third quarter by Belize City No Limit. However, Smart Belize Hurricanes was able to muster a strong fourth quarter to easily seal the 74-63 victory.

Smart Belize Hurricanes (10-2) was led by league-leading scorer Farron Louriano, who tallied 23 points and 8 rebounds, while Leroy Louriano had 11 pts, 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebs. Akeem Watters finished with a double-double, with 10 pts and 11 rebs.

The top scorer for Belize City No Limit (4-6) was Jamal Augustine with 17 pts and 5 rebs, while Michael Babbles had 13 pts, 4 assists and 3 rebs. Lennox Bowman tallied 11 pts and 4 rebs, and Keith “Superman” Acosta finished the night with 12 boards and 6 pts.

Belize City No Limit had a 48-38 rebounding edge, but Smart Belize Hurricanes had a 26-16 advantage on bench points.

Cayo Western Ballaz slows down Orange Walk Running Rebels out west

Orange Walk Running Rebels traveled out west to take on Cayo Western Ballaz at the Sacred Heart College auditorium on Friday night. The home team jumped out to an early 21-15 lead, which they extended to 34-22 at the half. Cayo Western Ballaz built on that lead in the second half to easily secure the 88-58 win.

Cayo Western Ballaz (7-5) was led by Winston Pratt, who had the game high with 14 pts, to go with 9 rebs and 4 assists, while Brandon Flowers finished with a double-double, with 13 pts and 13 boards. Jamal Harris tallied 12 pts and 8 rebs, and James Milton netted 11 pts, while grabbing 7 rebs.

Calbert Carcamo was the top scorer for Orange Walk Running Rebels (2-7) with 11 pts and 6 rebs, and he was the only scorer in double-digits for the visiting team. Shemar White and Lupito Acosta finished the night with 9 pts each.

Cayo Western Ballaz had a huge 61-28 rebounding edge, while outscoring Orange Walk Running Rebels 23-2 on second chance points, and grabbing 22 offensive rebounds.

Belmopan Bandits gets big win against Belize City No Limit

On Saturday night, Belmopan Bandits traveled to the old capital to complete their game versus Belize City No Limit, which had been stopped in the third quarter due to inclement weather. The game continued in the third quarter, where Belmopan Bandits had a 37-25 lead, when the game resumed. At the end of the third quarter, Belmopan increased that lead to 62-47, and was able to get the easy 82-67 victory.

Belmopan Bandits (7-4) was led by Kyle Pascascio, who tallied 24 pts, 6 rebs and 5 steals, including shooting 8/8 from the charity stripe. Stephen “Muerte” Williams had 21 pts, 4 rebs and 2 steals, and Nick Brown recorded a double-double with 15 pts and 12 rebs, to go with 4 assists and 4 steals. Jarrel Velasquez also finished in double-digit scoring with 13 pts, 7 dishes, 6 caroms and 2 steals.

Keith “Superman” Acosta was the main man for Belize City No Limit, tallying 19 pts and 7 rebs, while rookie sensation Jamal Augustine has become an explosive big man, recording 15 pts, 4 rebs and 4 steals. Michael Babbles finished with 12 pts, and Gregory “Chippy” Rudon tallied 9 pts, 7 rebs, 5 assists and 3 steals.

Belmopan Bandits had the lead for most of the game, shooting 41.3% from the field, compared to Belize City No Limit’s 30%. The battle on the glass was even at 45 rebs each, and Belmopan Bandits had the 22-15 edge on points off turnovers.

Dangriga Warriors conquered San Pedro Tiger Sharks on the island

Dangriga Warriors, coming off a huge win before the All-Star break versus Smart Belize Hurricanes, sailed to the island to take on San Pedro Tiger Sharks on Saturday night. In a hotly contested battle, with both teams taking the lead during the game, Dangriga Warriors was able to close off the game on a 13-8 run, to claim the 63-55 victory.

Dangriga Warriors (9-4) was commandeered by Jamir Flores, who tallied 16 pts, 4 steals, 2 rebs and 2 assists, while Edgar Mitchell chipped in 15 pts and 2 assists. Macario Augustine recorded a double-double with 10 pts and 15 rebs, to go with 2 steals and 2 blocks, and James Ewing and Daniel Nolberto registered 9 pts each in the win.

San Pedro Tiger Sharks’ (6-4) top scorer was Caleb Sutton, who scored 16 pts to go with 5 rebs, while Gene Myvett tallied 9 pts, 6 rebs and 4 assists. Andrew Ortiz finished the night with 9 pts and 10 boards.

Dangriga Warriors had the slight 32-31 rebounding edge, while holding a 12-8 advantage on second chance points.

Playoff Implications

With only 2 weeks remaining in the regular season, below are some playoff scenarios.

1] Smart Belize Hurricanes – first team to clinch a playoff spot, and has clinched the #1 seed going into the playoffs.

2] Dangriga Warriors – they will clinch a playoff berth if they win their last game versus Orange Walk Running Rebels, or if Cayo Western Ballaz loses their game versus Belmopan Bandits.

3] Cayo Western Ballaz – can clinch a playoff spot if they win their last 2 games versus Orange Walk Running Rebels and Belmopan Bandits.

4] Belmopan Bandits – must win 2 of remaining 3 games to make playoffs, including a win by more than 1 point versus Cayo Western Ballaz. Belmopan Bandits is riding a 6-game winning streak.

5] San Pedro Tiger Sharks – must win 3 of 4 remaining games to make playoffs.

6] Belize City No Limit – must win remaining three games AND San Pedro Tiger Sharks, Belmopan Bandits and Cayo Western Ballaz must lose all their remaining games, for Belize City No Limit to make the playoffs.

7] Orange Walk Running Rebels – must win remaining 5 games AND San Pedro Tiger Sharks, and Cayo Western Ballaz must lose all their remaining games, for Orange Walk Running Rebels to make the playoffs.

8] Independence Thunderbolts – has been eliminated from making the playoffs.
