Tonight was tip-off time for the semifinals of the Belize District Basketball Association (BDBA) Firms Tournament 2013, and word just reached our sports desk that Port of Belize and Customs were both victorious in the first game of their best-of-three games semifinal series.

In the opener tonight, Port of Belize trailed for three quarters before pulling out a 1 point, 57-56, win over a game Belize City Council. Port was led by Vince “Post” Estrada 15 pts, Earl Johnson 14 pts 8 rebs, and Ian “AC” Augustine 9 pts 7 rebs; while City Council had Ian Ferrera 16 pts 4 rebs, Densford Bevans 15 pts, and Kenroy Usher 10 pts.

The nightcap was more comfortable for Customs, who led all the way, finishing with a 55-50 win over Atlantic Bank. Top scorer for Customs was Winston Pratt 19 pts 5 rebs 3 assts, along with Kevin Lorenzo 12 pts 12 rebs 5 assts, and Oliver Solis 10 pts; while for Atlantic Bank, Ervin Orosco contributed 16 pts 10 rebs 4 assts, Eyan Rene 12 pts 8 rebs, and Jermaine Tillett 11 pts.

The best-of-three semifinals series continue this Friday night, October 11, at Bird’s Isle, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
