CrimeStray bullet almost kills student, 14

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Aug. 30, 2012

A girl, 14, a resident of Crown Street off Lacroix Boulevard in the Lake I area, is hospitalized at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after a stray bullet came through the wall of her house hitting her in the back around 6:30 this evening.

Police said that Doreen Aranda, a student, was in the living room of her home on Crown Street when someone inside a white car carrying three persons opened fire at some men who were standing near a Chinese store on La Croix Boulevard, but the men escaped injury. One of the bullets, however, went through the wall of the lumber house and struck the girl.

Police quickly responded and an ambulance came and gave the girl urgent attention before she was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Around 10:00 tonight, the family told Amandala that she has been stabilized, and was already talking, but her condition will not be fully known until tomorrow. Nevertheless, they hope that she will recover fully.

Police have since launched an investigation, but the shooters have not yet been captured, and the motive for the shooting is unknown.
