Verdes and Placencia Assassins win game 1 of PLB semifinals

SportsVerdes and Placencia Assassins win game 1 of PLB semifinals

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Dec. 7, 2015–The best-of-2 games semifinal series in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2015-2016 Opening Season tournament is halfway completed, as game 1 of both semifinals were held over the weekend.

On Saturday night at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, #3 seed Placencia Texmar Assassins turned back the very confident #2 seed Police United by a 2-1 margin. The Assassins jumped to a 2-nil first half lead, with goals from Alexander “Pleck” Peters (11’) and Luis “Baaca” Torres (39’), before Harrison “Cafu” Roches (83’) cut the lead in half for Police.

And on Sunday afternoon at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio, it was #4 seed Verdes FC delivering a shocking 2-nil blow to #1 seed Belmopan Bandits in a much anticipated encounter, following the late reversal of a protest decision in favor of the Bandits, after the final regular season game had already been completed. Fans were expecting to see #1 Police United vs #4 Verdes in the semifinals, but with the FFB overturned Protest Board decision taking 3 points away from Verdes and giving them to the Bandits, the Bandits thus overtook Police to become #1 in the regular season finals standings, and so they face Verdes instead in the playoff semifinals. It was a quiet regular season scoring-wise for Verdes’ last season playoff MVP Jarret Davis, with most of the Verdes scoring in this regular season falling on the shoulders of newly recruited star striker Deon McCaulay; but on Sunday, Jarret once again rose to the occasion, as he did against the Bandits in the last championship final, and struck twice (25’ & 27’) in quick succession, to give Verdes a 2-nil lead, which they defended until the final whistle.

Both semifinal series will be decided this coming weekend, where the aggregate scores at the end of regulation, and overtime if necessary, will determine which two teams go on to the championship round.

Upcoming semifinals game 2:

Saturday, December 12
7:30 p.m. – Belmopan Bandits FC vs Verdes FC – FFB Stadium

Sunday, December 13
4:00 p.m. – Police United FC vs Placencia Assassins FC – Norman Broaster Stadium (tentatively)
