Who murdered August Pine Ridge resident, Jose Ku, 79?

GeneralWho murdered August Pine Ridge resident, Jose Ku, 79?
Five weeks ago, Jose Ku, a 79-year-old of August Pine Ridge Village, Orange Walk District, went missing. Ever since then, his family has been searching for him, but yesterday, the father of thirteen children was found dead in an area some four miles north of the small community.

On Tuesday, November 15, two men from the village went fishing in an area four miles north of the community. The men noticed something in the dark water appearing to be the remains of a human being.

The men ran back to the village and informed the police; the body was brought in and the family was called. Their worst fear had been confirmed. It was the missing elderly man, Jose Ku. His straw hat, shoes and walking stick were missing. Ku was found him lying face-down on the edge of a small, dirty, dark pond, partly supported by the weeds at the edge of the pond. The body was mostly intact, although much of the flesh had fallen off the bones.

On Tuesday, October 11, when Ku disappeared, he was seen wearing a yellow shirt, brown pants and his straw hat. He also used a walking stick for support.

This evening when we arrived in August Pine Ridge, we were told that Ku’s decomposed body was at the burial ground waiting to be examined by a pathologist from Belize City. At the burial ground, about a hundred villagers gathered in support of the devastated family.

The body was in an advanced state of decomposition, but it was through Ku’s clothing that the family was able to identify him.

The past five weeks had not been easy for the family. When he initially disappeared, the family had reached out to the media, who notified the public of the disappearance. Then, rumors began to surface that Ku had been seen boarding a bus to Orange Walk Town; later the family received a call from someone who claimed to have Ku in their care. The family anxiously tried to return the call, but no one answered, causing them more pain.

The family does not believe that Ku went to the location where he was found on his own, because four miles were just too far for an elderly man, who used a walking stick for support, to walk.

The family believes Ku was murdered. Who could have wanted to hurt Ku and then dump the body some four miles away?

Up to the day of his disappearance, he was being looked after by a son. Very saddened by the unfortunate discovery of his father’s remains, his son told us that the last time he spoke with his father was when his father had told him that he was going over to one of his other sons in the village to pick up a machete he had loaned him. The son told us that he told Ku not to go, but his father would not listen.

At around 3:30 this evening, the family was informed that the pathologist would not be coming to perform the examination, and that Ku’s remains had to stay at the burial ground until tomorrow, when it is expected that the pathologist will arrive to carry out the examination.

The family plans on staying at the burial ground tonight, along with some of the villagers. Ku was loved by the villagers and his family celebrated every birthday of his.
