Highlights158 persons arrested for COVID-19 safety violations

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Aug. 31, 2020– Over the weekend, 150 persons were arrested countrywide for various violations of the Emergency Powers Regulations. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams made the announcement this morning.

The Police Commissioner said that 107 persons were charged with failing to wear a mask over their faces while in public; 41 were charged for breach of curfew; 9 were charged for failure to practice social distancing; and 1 person was charged for leaving mandatory quarantine before the prescribed time.

The countrywide State of Emergency was enacted in July to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and stiff penalties were put in place for violation of the regulations.
