GOB eats crow ? sells BTL back to Ashcroft!

The House of Representatives is scheduled to meet on Friday, June 17, 2005, to discuss some major money matters, including tax increases, the sale of shares in Belize Telecommunications Limited (BTL), and possibly the divestment of the assets of the Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

Debt servicing is putting a major strain on the public purse, and GOB is hoping that it can boost tax earnings and revenues from asset sales enough to alleviate that tight strain.

The Third Annual FM 2000 Father?s Day Classic

Traditionally a cycling race would run from the flat roads to the mountainous region. The Father?s Day Classic runs from the gradual ascent of the mountain range in the Cayo District crossing the entire length of the Western Highway, beginning at the Benque Viejo Del Carmen border. Then there is the plunge into the new Capital City, subsequently through the gentle rolling hills onto the flat roads leading to the Old Capital City on the coast. This is essentially the course the Father?s Day Classic follows ? the youngest of the classics.

Apology for a murder

Police on Wednesday arrested two Belizean minors, aged 16 and aged 14, and charged them with the rape and murder of a 20 year old Guatemalan domestic on Friday, June 10, in Lords Bank. Because the accused are minors, pictures of them have not been released, but all indications were that the two accused, who are brothers, are black. The victim is a Hispanic, from a group the streets of Belize have come to refer to as ?aliens.?

Father?s Day horse races Sunday in Burrell Boom

Well, I had ended my last month?s edition of ?Horseracing? with a plea to GOD to show our horses mercy from the treacherous racetrack at Castleton, and sure enough, GOD is good. The rainfalls in the country were surely felt in beautiful Burrell Boom over the past week, and a visit to the track reveals that this Father?s Day, June 19, 2005, promises to be a day of wholesome family fun filled with exciting horse racing. A11 the races should be fast due to the fast track condition.

THE WEEK IN INTEROFFICE BASKETBALL

BWSL ?Pressure? were able to exert extreme ?pressure? on ?Aero Despatch/Customs? in Monday night interoffice basketball, defeating them 55-47.

?Aero/Despatch/Customs? who entered the game as one of the four remaining undefeated teams, were not able to match up inside with ?BWSL? big men, Karim Thompson (28 pts 10 rebs) and Deon Andrews (6 pts 9 rebs), and as a result were out rebounded 34-25 in the game. Their fast break attack was practically non-existent, as their sparkplug player, Myron Flowers, was held to a season low 3 pts. This, coupled with Ronald Alarcon?s (15 pts) early second half disqualification from the game for verbally abusing the referees, made it a long night for ?Aero Despatch?.

Dear Sir,

Women have been relegated from the highest political parties arena in our country in such a way that we can count them with the fingers of one of our hands.  There have been a very few that have gotten the opportunity to serve as an area representative.
