Taxi operator, Rudrick Todd, 39, murdered; body dumped on Western Highway

GeneralTaxi operator, Rudrick Todd, 39, murdered; body dumped on Western Highway

Latest information today from the police is that Todd?s green Chevrolet Caprice taxi, with l/p D3369, missing since Wednesday, has been found. According to G. Michael Reid, police liaison officer, police, acting upon information they received late yesterday evening around 6:00, visited an area on Neal Pen Road, near Kraal Road, where they found Todd?s taxi abandoned near the side of the street.

Police say that they found the deceased?s blood inside the trunk, but they are uncertain whether he was killed inside his taxi, or elsewhere, placed in the trunk and dumped on the side of the road, where he was found.

There was nothing found in the car to help police with their investigation.

Police are presently seeking one suspect for questioning.

At a press conference held yesterday afternoon at the Queen Street Police Station, Assistant Inspector of Police, Chester Williams, said that around 7:30 a.m., a driver on the highway called police to inform them of a body lying off the road.

Todd?s body was lying off the main road, in a bushy area about 6-7 feet from the road. Both his hands had stiffened in the air, in front of him.

His green Caprice taxi that he rented for his daily runs has been reported missing by the owner, Kenneth Garbutt, 45, of Ladyville.

Todd?s personal belongings, including his cell phone, watch, and cash, and over $40.00 that he had in his possession were not found on him.

His elder brother, Kevin Todd, 34, told Amandala that the last time he saw his brother was home the night before, between 9:00-10:00 p.m., just after an NBA game ended.

Kevin said Rudrick came home after running taxi at the Cinderella Plaza, and they had a brief chat about what they planned to do the following day. Then, he [Kevin] left his brother home.

One hour later, he passed the taxi stand and said he blew the horn of his vehicle to his brother, and he responded by honking back.

This was the last time Kevin saw Rudrick alive.

The motive for the murder is believed to be robbery, said police, and because Rudrick?s personal belongings are still missing, his brother also believes that it could have been robbery.

Kevin said he is still in shock over his brother?s sudden death, because they had been very close, especially with both parents deceased. They had been living together at their family home, located at #48 Castle Street. Kevin said his brother was like his best friend, as they talked to each other, and if anything was bothering him, Todd would have told him that night when they spoke, said Kevin.

His fellow taxi operators at the Cinderella Taxi Association are mourning the loss of a man they said was a humble and honest man, who kept to himself and gave no trouble.

Kevin told us that his brother had told him that he had had an altercation about a month ago, when he had beaten up a man at the taxi stand. According to Rudrick, he had witnessed a man stealing a boat engine that belonged to a friend, also a taxi driver.

Rudrick had informed the friend where the stolen boat engine was, and the owner had recovered it.

Todd had been working as a taxi operator at the Cinderella Plaza Taxi Association for two years, but has been a taxi driver for four years.

He once worked as a security guard, but had told his brother he wanted to work for himself, something which he eventually ventured into in 2001.

Taximen at the Cinderella Plaza Taxi Association say they need to be more vigilant with passengers they pick up, because the job has proven to be very dangerous.

Many say they had warned Rudrick about the hours he worked alone, because he was known to run his taxi until about 4:00 in the morning.

The last time Todd was seen out at the taxi stand by his colleagues was at around 1:00 the morning he was found dead.

According to one of Rudrick Todd?s relatives, about four years ago, one of their brothers-in-law, Raymond Olivera, also a taxi driver and an ex-policeman, was found dead, shot in the head. His body was found at the Blue Hole National Park on the Humming Bird Highway. He was a taxi operator at the Princess Hotel, the last place he was seen before his death.

Rudrick Todd is predeceased by his mother, Louise Almira Todd Ebanks, and father, Charles Riley Todd. He is survived by one brother, Kevin Todd; three sisters, Eloise Tasher (Belize City); Pamela Tasher Castillo (USA) and Bernice Ebanks-Webb (USA), and two children, ages 5 and 7 of the U.S.A.

Funeral services for Rudrick Todd are not yet scheduled, because a post-mortem is pending.
