General2nd taxi driver murdered in Lake I in a week

BELIZE CITY, Mon. Nov. 30, 2020– Following the Wednesday, November 25 murder of “dollar van” cabbie Lynroy Longsworth on Mahogany Street, Erwin Castillo, 37, a former stevedore turned cab driver, became the second cab operator to be killed last week inside his vehicle in the Lake Independence area in Belize City.

On the night of Friday, November 27, at 10:50 p.m., Castillo was driving his Pontiac Vibe cab on Flamboyant Street, heading towards Mahogany Street, when someone exited a yard and fired several shots at him, which resulted in his fatal injuries.

After being shot, Castillo lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle rolled into the drain.

Police believe that Castillo’s death is connected to one of last week’s murders in Lake Independence, although they would not indicate which murder.

Chervin Tench, 19, a resident of Flamboyant Street, has been arrested and charged with Castillo’s murder.

In 2015, Castillo and 4 others were charged with the robbery of First Caribbean Bank’s Northside branch, from which they allegedly stole $52,753.25.
