We are not ?Indians?

LettersWe are not ?Indians?

I read some very interesting articles in the Amandala recently about ?Columbus come buk us,? ?Columbus come bruk us.? This is true. But that is another topic that we can elaborate on, at a later date.

The main point in writing this article is to give support to our fellow Mayas of the South who are being called ?Indians? when they are not. I read Mayor Anthony Chanona?s letter addressed to the Prime Minister with grave concern. Also I overheard a statement made over LOVE FM about ?who have more rights.? I think that it is not a matter of ?who have more rights.? The truth is that ?we are all Belizeans and we all have equal rights.?

It would be inconceivable for a right thinking person to call on a ?clean sweep? of the Maya people with Dragon Unit and Human Development agencies living around Belmopan, and force them back home in Toledo where they came from.

This is not only racist in nature but discriminatory, unjust, disrespectful and a violation of the human rights of the ?Mayas? of Belize.

As a director and current member of the ?U PI?IL U ICH MASEWAL?, the official umbrella organization of the Mayas of northern Belize (Corozal). I am joining with the Q?EQCHI? Council of Belize in asking Mayor Chanona to make a public apology to all the Maya people of Belize.

Not to do so, would amount to touch one, touch all or one for all and all for one.

Sincerely,

(Signed) Vicente Canul
