Shamir Medina, 19, an unemployed of Berkeley Street, was the first victim of gun violence on Friday night, March 25, 2011. He was shot several times in the abdomen and chest while riding on Plues Street. His shooting was believed to be connected to the shooting death of Devon Reynolds.
Amandala was denied an interview with his family members. However, police investigations have revealed that about 8:20 p.m., Medina was ambushed by men who opened fire and hit him several times. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
At about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, Medina succumbed to his injuries whilst undergoing treatment.
Medina has had a run-in with the law before. In May of 2009, there was a brazen broad daylight armed robbery attempt at the Western Union Office on Regent Street in downtown Belize City. Two police officers, a security guard, and a bystander were all injured during the unsuccessful attempt.
The security guard, Glenford Williams, died from his injuries a few weeks later. He was shot when the gunmen came in, and one of the assailants shot him again as they ran out.
On February 4, 2011, the three men accused of the murder were freed of the charges when they were withdrawn in the Magistrate’s court due to insufficient evidence.
Medina was among the accused, along with Brandon Taylor and Lincoln Hemsley. The charges were withdrawn by the prosecution based on instructions received from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
