Corozal conman impersonated CIB detective

CrimeCorozal conman impersonated CIB detective

Sayyed Jaffer Koya, 46, a businessman of 6th Avenue, Corozal Town, and owner of City Light Guest House at the same address in Corozal Town, was conned out of three days’ rent money and a bicycle by a man posing as a detective from the Crimes Investigation Branch attached to Belmopan.

The imposter owed $140 for three nights stay at the guest house, of which he paid $15, owing a balance of $125, and when he checked out on Wednesday, April 16, the man asked to borrow Koya’s bicycle, but never returned.

Koya, who became tired of waiting for the purported detective to return and settle his bill, went to the police on Friday, telling them that a visitor at his guesthouse introduced himself as a police officer attached to the Special Investigation Department in Belmopan.

The impostor said that he needed to stay for three nights in the guesthouse and that he would pay the bill, $140, on Saturday, April 19.

Police have arrested of a man from Xaibe, pending charges of obtaining services by deception and impersonating a police officer.
