ORANGE WALK TOWN, Sat. June 20, 2020– A cab driver, Vicente Flavio, 55, of Orange Walk Town, is alive and unhurt after he escaped from two bandits who tried to kidnap him. The firearm that one of the bandits used to hold him up and rob him misfired when the bandit tried to shoot him, and both thieves ran away after stealing his wallet and car keys.
Flavio then went to the police and made a report.
The incident occurred at about 10:00 this morning. Flavio told police that he was at the taxi stand on Queen Victoria Street when two men came up to him and requested that he take them to Trial Farm. He told police that on their arrival near the Belize Sugar Industries football field, one of the men pulled out a gun and demanded that he pull over and stop the car.
Flavio’s assailant then pointed his gun at him and stole his wallet, and took away the keys to the car.
The other robber tried to duct-tape his hands, but he put up resistance, and that was when the armed bandit tried to shoot him, but the gun malfunctioned. The two thieves then escaped from the area in the taxi.
The car was later recovered and taken to the police station, where it is parked pending refitting for a new ignition.
Police are now looking for the two robbers.
