The problem is not education; it is moral bearings

LettersThe problem is not education; it is moral bearings

Dear Editor,
I want to make reference to a very balanced article in last Friday’s Amandala that was written by Brother David Cruz, Sr. There are just two points I would like to comment on before I make some predictions. He says common sense is no longer an asset. I beg to disagree; some of the great leaders of yesterday never set foot in a university.

The suggestion that representatives should have degrees is not the solution. Most of the representatives, up to today, had a good level of education. One problem is that in the House of Representatives you have to deliver in the English language, and for some, their main means of communication is Creole, Spanish, or Garifuna. The House Rules should allow representatives to not only refer to notes, but to read from a prepared script.

The problem is not education. IT IS MORAL BEARINGS. I agree with Brother Cruz about some of the political leaders that he suggested should go, but one exception would be Mr. Waight. He should only go if the PUP replaces him with Dr. Barnett. Moral bearings are our problem, not the lack of intelligent people.

PREDICTIONS!
1. It appears that the PUP will win the majority of seats in the forthcoming general elections.

2. Lord Michael Ashcroft will direct the government through Mr. Eamon Courtenay.

3. Hon. John Briceño will be tolerated as Prime Minister for a while, until arrangements are made as to how government’s debt to Ashcroft will be settled.

4. Ashcroft will finalize ownership of the Port of Belize. The Waterloo project will be finalized.

5. Next year’s budget will have a massive gap. Elements of the PUP will pressure Taiwan to fill it, or face competition from mainland China to do the same.

6. The PUP pie-in-the-sky manifesto will come back to haunt them.

Belize needs leaders with moral clarity, leaders who are thinkers, not yes-men with papers from universities.

Sincerely,
Henry Young, Sr.
