SportsCoby delivers sports equipment to Belize City youths

BELIZE CITY, Wed. June 2, 2021– Returning to the U.S. on Friday after a week in the Jewel is 1970s Belize basketball star Evondale “Coby” Coburn, who has for the past decade plus been making annual visits to his hold hometown to give encouragement and support to disadvantaged youth through his Coby Foundation’s donation of sporting equipment and hosting a 3-on-3 knockout basketball tournament at Bird’s Isle that also enlisted the services of some veteran stars of the sport.

Alas, there was no camp last year (or this year) due to the State of Emergency, but Coby still managed to send some sporting equipment.

Coby explains: “Due to the rules and policies of the Covid-19 pandemic, Coby Foundation was unable to conduct our annual basketball camp. In lieu of the camp I’ve decided to donate some sporting equipment to different sporting clubs and organizations. Pulu Lightburn’s Future Shock received last year’s (2020) donation of basketballs, sneakers, and uniforms.”

According to Coby, this year’s 2021 recipients were: on Monday, Charlie Burton Park youths with coordinator G. Michael Reid; on Tuesday, Civic Center neighborhood kids under the guidance of Henry Marsden who lives across the street from the Civic outdoor court; and today, Wednesday, Jerome “Peeloff” Maheia’s Yabra Youth football club. Aside from basketball related items for the Charlie Burton and Civic groups, and football equipment for the Yabra group, all three groups also received assorted sports equipment and school supplies.

The donations include school supplies, basketballs, footballs, pumps, uniforms, whistles, referee uniforms, scorecards, warning cards, linesmen uniforms, and boots.
