Hon. Elvia Vega-Samos sworn in as Minister of State

PoliticsHon. Elvia Vega-Samos sworn in as Minister of State

BELMOPAN, Tues. June 1, 2021– Hon. Elvia Vega-Samos was elected as area representative for the Corozal Bay constituency in a by-election that was held synchronously with the 2021 municipal elections on March 3.

Samos became a candidate in the by-elections after the passing of her late brother, David “Dido” Vega, who had died of COVID-19-related complications just a short time after he was selected as area representative by the people of Corozal Bay in the November 2020 general elections. She was challenged by UDP candidate, Hilberto Campos, but she garnered more votes than he did — thus becoming the area representative-elect of the constituency.

Samos was officially sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives on April 9, 2021, and officially became the first female area representative for the Corozal Bay constituency.

Today, June 1, she was sworn in as the new Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs by Her Excellency Froyla Tzalam at the Belize House in Belmopan. Minister Samos was joined by both her family and the members of the House of Representatives at this event.

Samos’ new post in the ministry was previously held by Hon. Gilroy Usher, who will now assume the role of Minister of State in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics.
