Farewell to Raiders star, Willie “Shaq” Gordon

SportsFarewell to Raiders star, Willie “Shaq” Gordon

BELIZE CITY, Wed. Sept. 22, 2021– Our Amandala sports desk, along with fans countrywide and in the Belizean diaspora, was shocked by the news of the death of former national basketball champion Raiders star player, Willie “Shaq” Gordon, which occurred on Wednesday evening, September 15, at the hands of a bicycle riding gunman in King’s Park, Belize City.

Just over a month ago, our sports desk joined Belizeans in saying farewell to the Raiders’ cheerleader number one, Patrick “Beans” Lawrence/Lewis; and now we also must say farewell to a stalwart figure in the legendary Raiders lineup. No team in Belize has won as many national championships in its near decade-long reign as did the Raiders basketball team, and a fan favorite because of his enormous energy and intensity was Shaq. Sadly, from the appearance of the security video that captured his cold-blooded killing, it may well be that the young man that pulled the trigger was not even born yet, when Shaq, like others of his Raiders teammates, was regarded as sports royalty in the streets of Belize City.

Our sincere condolences to his family, relatives and friends. Rest In Peace, brother Willie “Shaq” Gordon.
