BELIZE CITY, Wed. Jan. 12, 2022– A resident of Red Bank Village, Stann Creek District, lost his leg when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a post in San Juan village in Stann Creek. According to reports, 22-year-old Belizean laborer Ortencio Sho was riding a motorcycle from San Juan to Red Bank when he lost control of the motorbike.

The collision resulted in his right leg below his knee being instantly sheared off. It is suspected that Sho was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

“When police arrived on the scene, they saw him with his right leg completely amputated. They also saw a motorbike in that area. They are saying that the initial report is that he was driving his motorbike under the influence of alcohol when he collided into the San Juan plantation sign – a post – and they are saying that that is where he received his injuries. They are saying the bus on that scene slowed down because they saw him on the side of the highway when they arrived on that scene. So, the police are saying that the injuries were not caused by the bus,” stated the Police Department’s communications director, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood. (There had initially been speculation that the bus had hit Sho and caused his injury.)

Following the accident, gory footage posted on social media showed Sho’s amputated leg in a field several yards away from where he was seen, sitting upright on the road with a missing lower right leg. Sho was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he was listed as being in a stable condition.  One local television news station had reported that Sho subsequently passed away as a result of his injury, but this has not been confirmed.
