Altitude loses; Verdes wins, retakes lead at Week 7 of PLB Opening Season

SportsAltitude loses; Verdes wins, retakes lead at Week 7 of PLB Opening Season

BELIZE CITY, Thurs. Sept. 15, 2022

The first round of the double round-robin Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2022-2023 Opening Season was completed with Week 7 games this past weekend. Defending champions, Verdes FC remain undefeated, while cellar dwelling Bandits SC are still winless. Two games each were played on Saturday, the Tenth, and Sunday, September 11.

We still have not received official scoring details from the PLB, only the game scores. And our sincere regrets about last Sunday’s disappointment for MCC fans whom we had led to expect Altitude FC’s goal scoring leader Andres Orozco in their line-up. We found out later that he was serving a game suspension due to accumulated yellow cards, something the league has not seen as important to share with us in advance of games. Come on, PLB!

Saturday, Tenth results

Out at the Ambergris Stadium young Progresso FC from Orange Walk held home standing San Pedro Pirates FC to a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, out west at the Marshalleck Stadium it was also a 1-1 stalemate between Benque FC and visiting Wagiya SC from Dangriga.

Sunday, September 11 results

Here at the MCC Grounds, Shawn Young struck twice early in first half, and Gilroy “Bredda” Thurton got what proved to be the 3-2 game winner for Port Layola FC over Altitude FC, after Altitude had bounced back to level the score at 2-2. Meanwhile, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio, defending champs Verdes FC cruised to a 5-0 win over the rebuilding Bandits SC who remain winless at Week 7. (See standings below.)

Having taken down then league leading Altitude FC, the spotlight will be on Port Layola FC this Sunday when they host undefeated defending champion, Verdes FC at the MCC. Altitude was without their star striker Andres Orozco last Sunday, but indications are that Verdes will be “fully loaded” and taking no chances with the upstart newcomers from Port Layola.

Upcoming Week 7 schedule:

Saturday, September 17

7:30 p.m. – Benque Viejo FC vs Altitude FC – Marshalleck Stadium

Sunday, September 18

4:00 p.m. – Progresso FC vs Bandits SC – Louisiana Football Field

4:00 p.m. – Port Layola FC vs Verdes FC – MCC Grounds

4:00 p.m. – Wagiya SC vs San Pedro Pirates FC – Carl Ramos Stadium
