Belize and the Catholic community around the world were deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Reverend Monsignor Herbert Ignatius Panton on May 29, 2023.
Panton, known for his radiant personality and a sense of humor that touched all, passed away peacefully in Kingston, Jamaica at 11:25 a.m., following a prolonged illness. He was 88 years old.
Herbert Panton, born on June 8, 1935, in Belize City, Belize, dedicated his life to the service of others. Ordained as a Diocesan priest on April 16, 1964, he served several parishes in Belize before relocating to Jamaica.
There, his steadfast devotion to his faith was recognized by Pope John Paul II, who bestowed upon him the title of Monsignor of the Diocese of Montego Bay, Jamaica.
“Our prayers and sympathies go out to his family, friends, and fellow priests,” stated the Roman Catholic Diocese in their announcement.
Panton, the eldest of eight siblings, was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Gladys Panton; his brother Frank, and sisters Margaret Panton and Sister Marilyn Panton, RSM.
He is survived by his sister, Sister Leona Panton, RSM, and brothers Michael, Bernard, and Boisrand.
A Vigil service and Office for the Dead was held on Monday, June 19, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., with the Funeral Mass being held on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, in Reading, Jamaica.
As the news of Panton’s passing spread, tributes began to pour in. Hon. Tracy Panton shared a touching tribute on her Facebook page, expressing gratitude for Panton’s life and his unique ability to spread joy even as he shared God’s teachings.
“I give thanks for the life of Monsignor Herbert Panton. He was indeed special to me. He had such a great sense of humor and he was a deeply spiritual man, always finding ways to share God’s love and teachings with others. I believe he is now in the full embrace of God’s unconditional love and infinite light. RIP Father P, I loved you so very much. Thank you for your wise, prayerful counsel over the years. I will miss your physical presence here in this earthly realm,” she wrote.
Her sentiments were echoed by many, including a former principal of Sacred Heart College, who remembered Panton with great fondness: “Rev. Herbert Panton … it’s so sad to hear of his passing. Nothing but laughter and joy wherever he was. We had an amazing time while I was the principal of Sacred Heart College. His great sense of humor shall live on in our hearts and minds,” she said.
Monsignor Panton’s death is indeed a significant loss for the community. However, his legacy of joy, faith, and service to his fellow man will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him.
