At the risk of being bombed as a former politician, I venture to comment on two points raised in recent articles by Marie-Therese Belisle-Nweke:
In an article referenced the Jesuits of Landivar opening advanced education with a progressive university in Guatemala, she insinuated that the university was not top of the line. My position is that ever since the Jesuits stopped burning people at the stake to save their souls, they have contributed unwaveringly to lift the education standard of Belizeans and others. The beauty of getting advanced education is immeasurable. Instead of coming home once every two years, you can home every weekend if you want. Once you are educating someone with reading, writing, and arithmetic, you are contributing.
The next point I want to raise is where the Honorable George Cadle Price commented about not wanting Belizeans to become a nation of waiters. My counterpoint to him would be, “Would you rather have a nation of beggars and criminals?” There is dignity in all labor. In my long life on this earth, I have experienced poor service and tasteless food. Enter a good waiter with a tasty dish and you forget everything, and you revisit.
Keep on writing, Ms. Therese, as your effort to stimulate thinking is immeasurable.
