Lloyd Augustus was badly beaten in April for a borrowed bike

Lloyd Augustus, 35, who was allegedly beaten by two brothers near his home on Central American Boulevard in Belize City in April of this year, has succumbed to the injuries he received during that savage beating.

Augustus, a native of Roaring Creek, in the Cayo District, was socializing with a group of men in his yard on Sunday, April 6, when he reportedly borrowed a bicycle from one of the men, but when he took too long to return the bicycle, he was mercilessly bashed into a coma.

He died early this past Saturday morning, June 28, and while police had not initially reported the incident, Assistant Superintendent Calbert Flowers, of Precinct 2 Belize City Police, told the media today that police did make an effort to follow up the case, and said that one of the suspects have been charged.

He said, “It [the incident] was investigated and someone was arrested and charged for attempted murder; because the victim was beaten so badly, he had to be hospitalized in critical condition. The accused has been remanded into custody on a charge of attempted murder.”

According to police, that individual has been identified as a 22-year-old man of a Belize City address, who will now be facing a murder charge in connection with Augustus’ death.

After the attack, Augustus underwent multiple surgeries as doctors at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital attempted to treat his severe and compounded injuries, which included a fractured skull.

Shortly after the incident, Augustus’ sister told Amandala the details of the incident, and described the extent of the injuries that Augustus had suffered from the beat-down.

“One of my friends came and told me that they just took my brother to the hospital because they found him on the street side, and he had been beaten badly. When I went to the hospital, the doctors said that he was in a coma”, she said, adding that, “They told me that he had asked a young man to borrow his bike to go visit my sister, and the young man told him to go ahead, but don’t take long”.

“So my brother went and they told me that he indeed took long, so I understand that the young man said, ‘Watch it, weh wa ketch he when he come back’,” Augustus’s sister related.

She went on to describe what happened next: “When my brother returned, everyone had already gone inside and I think that it was then that they got the chance to beat him. When he was entering the yard, the young man knocked him in his head, and my brother dropped the bike and ran to the back of his house.

“Right there, he fell and they beat him, but he got up and ran back to the front of the yard, and tried to open his door, but they caught him and beat him again until he was unconscious. They then dragged him out to the street side on Central American Boulevard,” she said.

Augustus’ sister further noted that both sides of his jaw had been broken, the teeth on the left side of his mouth were missing, his nose was broken, and he had a fractured skull.

Augustus had revived from out of the coma about a week after the incident, and was being fed through a tube, but yesterday, his sister told us that sometime last week, his condition deteriorated and it became problematic to feed him, because he constantly vomited his food, after which he later died.
